- description: An earthquake of magnitude 7.4 has struck near Christchurch, New Zealand. The quake hit 57 miles north east of the city, which is on the east coast of the country's South Island. It struck in the early hours of Monday morning in Christchurch which was reduced to rubble by an earthquake just five years ago. Today's earthquake measured much more powerfully on the Richter scale than 2011's 6.3 measurement. Locals took to social media to show pictures and videos of their devastated homes.
