  • description: In 1947 a scrap metal merchant from Palmerston North called Tom Larsen brought hundreds surplus of American aircraft which were used to fight the Japanese in the Pacific Conflict of WW2. The aircraft were stored at Rukuhia, a rural area in the North Island of New Zealand. The aircraft were dismantled, with the aluminium parts melted down into ingots, the hydraulics and wheels were sold to local farmers to make machinery. The Aircraft were dismantled over a period of 12 years and many smaller parts not worth salvaging remain nearby, buried but not forgotten. The majority of aircraft were F4U Corsairs, P-40 Kittyhawks and Lockheed Venturas. A few other aircraft used during the Pacific Conflict of WW2 were also dismantled. Only in New Zealand would you sheep roaming alongside these great aircraft. I do not own the photos in this video, but collected them from the public domain, to share this great piece of NZ history. music is 'I dunno" by Grapes (open source)
