  • description: A wage increase to $12 an hour for Walmart employees would only cost Walmart shoppers 46 cents per shopping trip. The average consumer spends roughly $1,187 yearly at Walmart. A $12 an hour wage increase would cost me $12.49 a year; less than a plate of red snapper and coconut rice I eat in the Colombian restaurant; with a salad and fried cassava sticks. Walmart recently threatened to halt plans to build stores in Washington D.C. if a new law passed forcing them to pay their employees a "living wage" of $12 an hour. A law that would force large retailers to pay a living wage should be passed nationwide; so big companies like Walmart won't have a refuge to exploit people on low wages anywhere in the United States. What are they going to do pull out of the United States completely, go to China and solely sell frogs and alligators with oranges lodged in their snouts? As a matter of fact why don't you just raise the living wage to $12 to $13 across the board? A U.C. Berkeley study found that if the cost of a wage increase in Walmart to $12 an hour would be passed on to consumers, it would only cost Walmart customers $0.46 per shopping trip. Link to U.C. Berkeley study: http://laborcenter.berkeley.edu/retail/bigbox_livingwage_policies11.pdf I seriously doubt spending an extra two quarters is going to stop me from going to WalMart if they're the only store that has a $25 steamer pot I need to keep eating vegetables so my six pack doesn't turn into a keg. I think I spend more on the gum ball machine when my kids start screaming if I don't buy them a plastic acorn for $.75 that never gives me the cereal box toy they want. All i need to do is strap a pirate patch to their right eye for you always seem to have to exit Walmarts to the left; and the irresistible gum ball machines on the right will be blocked from view as we exit. Then we could pay the extra $0.46 it's going to cost to give your employees a living wage. And if you're worried about the cost for a pirate eye patch; just lend all your customers with kids one per child and have parents give them back by throwing them in a box as they walk out like 3-D glasses at a movie theater; then just wipe them with hand sanitizer, for the next tyrant brat's use. If that doesn't work, just blindfold every kid that walks in with a piece of duct tape.
