Wexford Sinfonia and their partnering choirs have been putting the finishing polish to what will be an epic concert of Giuseppe Verdi's choral masterpiece 'Requiem'. Along with Wexford Festival Singers, Vocaré, Enniscorthy Choral Society and Gorey Choral Group, the orchestra will be joined by four vocal soloists of international renown. Miriam Murphy (soprano) and Imelda Drumm (mezzo) will reunite again with conductor Fergus Sheil for the first time since October when Wide Open Opera's critically acclaimed 'Tristan & Isolde' in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre received five-star reviews. They will also be joined by the tenor James Edwards and bass John Molloy. The combination of over 200 performers will result in a tsunami of sound to reproduce the extremes of bombast and subtle emotions that are displayed in 'Requiem'. The Verdi choral work was chosen to join in a worldwide commemoration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of the composer. Verdi's main career focus was opera with some universally hummable melodies from works such as Rigoletto, La traviata, Nabucco, Il Trovatore and Aida. Despite this operatic pedigree, Verdi always had an ambition to turn his genius to a requiem. He toyed with the music over five years but in 1874 the piece premiered in Milan and has since been his most regularly performed non-opera work. The performance takes place in the O'Reilly Theatre of the Wexford Opera House on June 1st at 8pm. Booking from Wexford Opera House (053) 912 2144.
