  • description: ANNA Meares beat arch-rival Victoria Pendleton two heats to nil to claim track cycling's women's sprint gold medal. Meares rode two well-executed, come-from-behind heats to take out the final, although it took a judge's decision to give her the first heat in the best-of-three ride-off. Meares had the inside running for the second heat, but clearly wanted Team GB star Pendleton, in the last race of her great career, to take the lead. After the Australian executed a track stand, Pendleton duly went to the front. But Meares tore past her on the final lap for a convincing win. It is Meares' second Olympic gold medal, following her world record in the 500m time trial at the 2004 Olympics. She won bronze in the sprint at the Athens Games and finished a distant second to Pendleton in the same event at Beijing.
