  • description: JACK COLLISON put West Ham one step closer to a Premier League return. The Welsh midfielder stunned his fellow countrymen as the Hammers took a firm grip in the first Championship play-off semi-final. He netted two first-half goals as Cardiff floundered on their own patch and the Cockney boys will fancy their chances of completing the job in Monday's return leg. Collison raced on to Ricardo Vaz Te's inviting pull-back after nine minutes to shoot goalwards. David Marshall did well to palm the ball away but Collison was on hand to head home the rebound. Marshall was left with no chance when Collison's fierce drive deflected off Liam Lawrence on 41 minutes into the Cardiff goal. Peter Whittingham went closest for the home side with a deflected effort that hit the bar before he drilled another chance just wide. Kenny Miller stung Robert Green's hands but Marshall pulled off a blinding save to keep out Carlton Cole's well-directed header. Kevin Nolan flashed a bullet header over from no more than six yards, while at the other end Mark Hudson planted a free header wide.
