- description: The truth of cartmanrulez99 is here: http://tinyurl.com/l29rkya When you email your professor for the first time, things can go very wrong if you think this is a text message to your BFF! In all seriousness, there are some etiquette skills to learn in this video to make the best first impression. Moreover, you probably do not want to miss many classes at the start of any semester. 9/10/14 UPDATE: Recently, I received some emails and comments and I appreciate the praise. I am flattered that others have shared this and use it to help improve communication (and possibly save some conflict). Most importantly, that email was not a word-for-word copy of a student's email. This is a mash up of many poor emails, some common email mistakes and some of my own embellishment compiled into one email. Let me repeat: I would never post an email of a student to the Internet nor would I suggest anyone else ever doing that. Therefore, cartmanrulez99 is not real person. 9/12/14 UPDATE: 100,000+ views! I would like to thank Digg and twentytwowords.com for featuring this video! Some people even found errors that I missed in the email. Since I mashed together several bad emails to make this, the error was probably mine. Well done! I am humbled by the attention this is getting and I want to say two more things: 1. Some think I am bashing the youth. I am not. In my opinion, each and every generation is smarter than the previous generation. I have seen that first-hand in my twenty years of teaching. If you think that there were no dumb people in the past, think again. 2. I am bashing (in my feeble attempt at comedy) lazy language we use in formal settings. There are many videos on YouTube that do a better job of explaining how to write a nice, professional sounding email and I urge you to seek them out. 9/15/14 UPDATE: nearing 200,000 views! WOW! I am getting a lot of positive feedback and some are still confused about "cartmanrulez99." He is a work of fiction! I added an annotation to the start of this video since few people read video descriptions. Trust me, I would never talk like this to a student nor do I hope any teacher/professor would. Students deserve respect. However, this video highlights some mistakes students make and perhaps this will serve as a warning for avoiding these phases: 1. Did I miss anything important? (A: Yes, you did.) 2. Do I need a book? (A: Yes, you do.) 3. [any phrase with ;) in it] As always, I hope this video drives the point home in a comical way that you should take the time on that first impression to be professional and make good decisions about attending class. Thank you!
